From The Ground Up
Globe - Miami - Winkelman
Water in the Mountains
Across Arizona’s Copper Corridor, the communities of Miami, Globe, and Winkelman sit within a landscape shaped by steep canyons and copper-rich mountains. These towns, each distinct, yet deeply connected, share a long history of resilience and adaptation. The copper-rich hills surrounding Miami, Globe, and Winkelman have allowed generations of people to build their lives here.
For more than a century, mining and agriculture have guided the growth of these communities. Miami and Globe rose from the momentum of early copper mining, drawing families who carved out neighborhoods, transportation routes, and water systems in the mountains. About 35 miles south of this, Winkelman developed at the confluence of the Gila and San Pedro Rivers, where dependable water supported mining, farming, and a quieter way of life. Over time, these towns have continued to evolve, blending their historic roots with new opportunities for recreation, culture, and community life.
Today, Miami, Globe, and Winkelman carry their legacies forward by strengthening their approach to water stewardship. We honor their history by working together to protect supplies and promote water conservation practices that safeguard this essential resource. In a landscape where every drop matters, this shared commitment ensures that these communities remain strong, connected, and prepared for the future.

Taking Action
Water conservation isn’t about restricting water use in every possible way. It’s about being mindful of using each drop as efficiently as possible to eliminate unnecessary waste as we maintain our desired quality of life. It’s also about recognizing how residential, commercial, and industrial water usage promotes the wellbeing of the community. Water conservation is a responsibility shared by all, and in an effort to uphold this responsibility, the Town of Miami, the City of Globe, and Arizona Water Company (AWC) are partnering to launch From the Ground Up, an Integrated Demand Management Program, or IDMP. The IDMP launched at a First Friday Event in Globe on April 3rd, 2026, where municipal and AWC staff promoted the partnership and discussed local water resources and conservation information with community members.
What is an Integrated Demand Management Program (IDMP)?
Integrated stems from the collaboration from stakeholder partners – in this case, the Town of Miami, the City of Globe, and AWC – to unify existing water conservation efforts and to provide new efforts for the community. Because of this collaboration, the IDMP can focus on the needs of these communities and provide water conservation efforts where they are needed most. Demand management pertains to the idea that we all contribute to water demand, and when we all play our part in conserving water, we can reduce that demand. Every drop of water conserved is a gallon left in the ground, and the partners are equally committed to minimizing local water waste
What to Expect
Through the From the Ground Up partnership program, the City of Globe, Town of Miami, and AWC are working together to further existing conservation resources and create new ones, such as:
- Free residential workshops
- Youth water education efforts
- Public presentations and events
The IDMP will be a centralized area where community members can go to get information on water conservation. The IDMP focuses on making conservation resources accessible to residents, businesses, and visitors in the area. This will look like:
- A Facebook page that posts ongoing tips and information on water conservation topics like passive and active rainwater harvesting
- Educational videos to teach people where their water comes from
- And much more!
When we all use water wisely, the entire aquifer, and everyone who depends on it, benefits greatly. For those who call Miami, Globe, and Winkelman home, let’s keep strengthening our conservation efforts, From the Ground Up.

Use the above map to view Arizona Water Company and the City of Globe’s water service area. There is a search feature in the top right corner that you may use to locate a certain service address to determine the water provider. Your water provider is who you receive a monthly water utility bill from.
